AVA CEPEDA STATE CHAMPION

Ava Cepeda made history on Hawaii Island on Wednesday by becoming Kahuku High’s first state girls golf champion.

Cepeda, who will play at the University of New Mexico next year, shot a 3-under 141 over the two-day David Ishii/HHSAA event to win by three strokes at the Mauna Lani Resort North Course in Kamuela.

“I’m so super grateful to have achieved this accomplishment and I am so proud to be the first girl from Kahuku to win #RR4L,” Cepeda posted on her Instagram account, using the acronym for "Red Raider For Life."

Cepeda trailed Punahou’s Alexa Takai by three strokes after Day 1 on Tuesday, when Takai shot a 3-under 69 to Cepeda’s even par 72. Cepeda shot 3-under 69 on Wednesday, while and Takai was 3 over to finish at par 144 and alone as the runner-up.

Mililani’s Kate Nakaoka was third at 1-over 145.

Kahuku had two boys golf individual state champions — Lance Suzuki in 1969 and Van Wright in 1995 — but no girls.
