Human Physiology (Period 6) Assignments

Starting today Feb. 1 and for the next 2 weeks we will be building muscles out of clay on a plastic human model.  Students will work with a partner to build approx 25 to 30 musclesthe and will be graded on completing the assignment, filling in the muscle building chart in the notebook and on an oral quiz locating the muscle by name and stating its action and origin and insertion sites.  

All students should have introductory notes on the muscle system entered into their notebooks from the muscle powerpoint.  The powerpoint is attached.

 

All students should have made a model of a muscle using spaghetti, aluminium foil, sarah wrap, paper and masking tape.  Following completetion of model students should take an oral quiz over the structures in the model: fiber, endomysium, perimyscium, fascicle, epimysium, tendon.  

 

Students should also have the Muscle action/movement and other muscle vocabulary entered into their notebooks and defined.  This can also be found in the muscle powerpoint that is attached.

Today we went over the steps of the scientific process.  Students will be working with a group to investigate how some factor effects our blood pressure.  This activity is the final for the unit.  The final product is to write a research paper reporting on your experiment.  Please see the attached handout.  Also attached is the powerpoint reviewing the scientific process.  The research paper will be due on January 22.  

Students are investigating the effects of exercise on our heart rates.  The lab writeup is due.  If you were absent, please come in and make up the lab during action period.

Today we will have a quiz over the path of the blood through the heart.  I am attaching the power point for this unit. We have not covred all of it yet, but it might be a nice resource.  

Today we took notes on Heart Physiology.  We focuses on the double pump system and the 2 cardiac cycles.  Attached is a note taking sheet.  These notes came from the Cardiovascular system Powerpoint.  It has been uploaded too.  You will need to  scroll through the slides to find this section.

With a partner create a model of the heart using clay.  Each model must have lungs, 4 chambers, 4 valves and 4 vessels.  They should be labeled.  Each student will be given an oral quiz on the path of the blood into the heart, to the lungs, back to the heart and our to the body.

Today in class we began studying the heart's anatomy and physiology.  We drew a sylized heart and labeled the following parts.  4 chambers: right and left atriums and right and left ventricles.  4 valves: tricuspid, bicuspid, pulmonary valve and aortic valve, and 4 blood vessels: vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein, aorta.

 

For those learning from home I will post the powerpoint for the cardiovascular system. 

Today in class we took notes on blood types and did a blood typing lab.  I'm attaching the powerpoint notes.   Please come in as soon as possible to make up the lab.

For those of you that have been at home and missing classes I am adding the powerpoint for the skeletal system.  Also attached is the worksheet for bone markings and long bone, and diagram for the vertebra and ribs.  If you have the white book the pages are different, but it is in the skeletal system chapter.

This week students are researching osteoporosis with groups.  On Thursday they will begin making skits to present to the class that cover key topics related to osteoporosis.  Attached is a list of the questions students are researching.

Today we looked at types of fractures by examining x rays.  You should have some fracture notes in your notebook as well as a summary of how bones repair.

Today students explored bone repair with a movie.  There were movie questions so if you missed please come watch the movie.

You should also be working on completing the skeletal diseases chart in your notebook. The disease chart is below You can look these up on line if you did not get it done in class.

You also need to complete the worksheet that covered bone markings, bone types, vertebra column and ribs.  

 

Today you will also receive the notes on the Long Bone and label the diagram.

 

You should finish both of the worksheets on the skeletal system.  One coveres the vertebra and ribs and the other covers bones shapes, markings and long bone anatomy.  Both are due by the end of the week.  Both are attached below

In class today we are finishing up our notes on the Integumentary system and doing a lab on tactile localization.  This is the abiltiy to detect the location of a touch.  It is dependent on the touch receptors in your skin.  If you are absent please come in to do perform the lab.

We are beginning our unit on the Integrimentary system with notes from a powerpoint lecture.  Attacdhed is the notesheet and the powerpoint.  If you were not here, please use these resources to catch up.

Today in class you will be looking at different types of tissue under the microscope and on-line and drawing detailed pictures in your notebook of what you see.  You should set up your notebook with 2 pages.  Each page should have 8 boxes, 4 on  each side of the page.  In the box you will draw what you see.

We have finished taking notes on the 4 types of tissue.  Use the attached Cornell note sheet and the powerpoint on tissue to  get your notes

Tissue Lab.  2 part lab looking at various tissues.  Part 1 was to look at 8 slides under the microscope and to draw picutures of each type and determine what tissue type it is.  Part 2 is to go online to a site and look at 8 more tissue examples and draw pictures of these and label the tissue type.  To make up this lab you must come in to the microscopes for part 1 and go to the internet for part 2.

We are working on Case Studies about Death from drinking too much water.  Maybe you  remember the young woman, Jennifer Strange, that took a radio challenge to drink water to win a wii and she died. This was because too much water in the blood sets up a hypotonic situation and the cells take in the water causing them to explode.

 

Attached is a case study.  Please read the 3 cases in Part 1 and then answer question 1-5 in Part 1.  Next you will read  the Hyponatremia Fact Sheet and answer the next set of your question in Part 11 question 1-9.  Attached are the case materials

Review for a chapter test on cell parts and functions and membrane transport. The test will be Tues Sept 8.

Today we finished all notes on Plasma Membrane transport and completed a Bull's Eye chart to compare and contrast Passive and Active Transport. Attached is a handout explaining what you should do for the bull's eye. This should be completed in your notebook.  

 

Also in your notebooks you should have finished and taped in the Work Packet on Cell types and Membrane transport and the Labeled and color coded diagram of the cell.

 

Notebooks will be collect on Monday.  MAKE SURE TO HAVE YOUR TABLE OF CONTENTS COMPLETED SHOWING ALL THE NEW MATERIAL SINCE LAST CHECK

Attached is a power point covering the material in Chapter 1.  Use it if you need.

Part 1.Students should finish notes on 8 necessary life functions, draw a picture for each function and write what organ systems help to carry out these functions.  

Ex.  Maintaining Boundaries This function is necessary in order to keep things out of the body that should not be in the body and to keep the things in the body that should be there.   

For the picture you could draw a wall.

The organ system that does this is the Integumentary system

 

Part 2.  Take notes on the 5 Survival needs that the body has given by the teacher.

 

Part 3  Learn the names of the 10 directional terms and write two sentences for each one.  (20 sentences in all)

 

 Attached is a power point of Chapter one that has  the notes for this.

All students have been given a composition notebook.  The front cover needs to be completed by Aug. 6.  The cover should have your name,  period, 3 color pictures and a slogan.

Students have been assigned an organ system.  They are to make a colored poster of the system.  The poster must include: Name of system.  Body diagram showing all the organs of the system  and labeled, a description of the overall function of that system and the names and descriptions of 2 diseases.

Notes on definitions of Anatomy, Physiology and homeostasis and a chart describing the 7 levels of structural organization should be completed in the notebook in Cornell note style.  This should be entered into the Table of Contents page.

The Handout called Questions to Start the Year is due on  Mon.  8/3.
