Q3 Attendance Policy




-Monday and Tuesday: Teachers will take attendance during mandatory Synchronous Meetings for the periods attending for that day—Monday (Period 1, 2, 4, and 4) and Tuesday (Period 5, 6, and 7).

  • Students will be marked absent if they are more than 15 minutes late to Synchronous Meetings and/or if they leave early. Excusing these absences are up to the teacher’s discretion. 

-Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: Teachers take attendance via asynchronous check-in questions. Student response to these check-in questions are due by 12:00 p.m. on that day.

-Thursday and Friday: School-Designated Students attending In-Person Meetings for Periods 1-7Students need to do their asynchronous check-in questions for their classes.

  • School-Designated Students who are late to their In-Person Meetings will be sent to Lock Out in the cafe for the remainder of the class period and will be marked absent.


School-Related Excused Absences

-Chapter 19 consequences

-School authorized activities on and off campus activities (i.e. academic competitions/programs/meetings, DOE athletics, field trips, assessments, etc.)

-Illness verified by the Health Aide/Designee (students are required to get a Student Pass prior to leaving campus for absence to be excused—even with a submitted parent/legal guardian note or email)

Non-School Related Excused Absences 

-Family Death*

-Court Appearance*

-Difficult to schedule appointments (e.g., DMV, acquiring government/employment documents, etc.)*

-Medical/Dental Reasons (Medical doctor/dentist note required after three consecutive days; no make-up work after 10 consecutive days even with a note) 

*Written verification required.

*Students adhere to teachers' syllabi regarding make-up work for excused absences. 

*Absences totaling four or more days (maximum of 10 days) require an Extended Absence Request.

Email written verification to notes@kahukuhs.k12.hi.us) within three business days upon a student’s return to school for absences amounting to three days or less. Please include the following information: date, student name, date(s) of absence(s), reason for absence(s), parent/legal guardian printed name, signature, and contact number. Phone calls will not be accepted to excuse absences. Late or retroactive emails will be documented, however, absences may not be excused and teachers will not be required to provide make-up work.

Extended Absences Request (Revised SY 2020-2021)

All absences between 3 and 10 days consecutive days need to be approved by the grade level administrator at least 10 days in advance of the days that your child is requesting to be absent. Please Email VP Macadangdang (grade 7-9) at patricia.macadangdang@k12.hi.us or VP Vendiola (10-12) uila.vendiola@k12.hi.us, and they will help you with this process.


-Students are expected to be passing all classes.

-Absences will not be excused during Finals Week or the last five days of semester one and semester two. 

-Students may be required to submit documentation for requests. 

-Absences will not be excused for additional days required for self or mandatory quarantining.
