As we push towards the finish line it is important that you end strong!  You are 
expected to be in class, turn in quality work, and pay your graduation fee and all

PARENT ANNOUNCEMENT
A letter went home yesterday, 5/2/17 from the Superintendent, Kathy Matayoshi. 

This memo was to inform parents about a recently released Netflix series called 
Thirteen Reasons Why.  This show has sparked great interest amongst teens here 
at KHIS and around the country, and is of great concern due to the graphic elements
and potential messages it sends out on the subject of suicide.  Please be sure to 
read the attached letter and contact school administration if you have any questions.
Additionally, please know that KHIS counselors and administration are available at

In response to this and other concerns regarding social media, parents are encouraged

to attend: POWER DOWN: Calming the Social Media Frenzy, Thursday 5/4  .
6-7:30pm in the Cafeteria.  

This free information session will break down the basics of popular teen social media

sites and empower families to recognize the signs of cyber bullying.  The first 50 
families to RSVP by texting RR4L to 352-6019 will get a POWER DOWN KAHUKU
packet.  Light refreshments will be available for the whole family and participants will
be automatically entered to win our prize drawings from our sponsors! Must be present

VARSITY AIR RIFLERY 
Any students in Grades 8 - 11 who are interested in joining the Varsity Air Riflery 
team next year, can sign up in the front office from Thursday, May 4 through 
Tuesday May, 9th. The first meeting/practices starts on July 31, at 3:00 PM
at the School Rifle Range.  Optional practices are July 24 -27 3:00 PM. at the

FRESHMAN / SOPHOMORE BANQUET CANCELLED 
A big mahalo and kudos to the 27 Freshman and 10 sophomore students who 
submitted their permission forms and monies for the banquet as directed.  Despite 
our collective efforts, banquet has been cancelled this year.  We look forward to 
providing you with a grand banquet experience next school year!  Just don't 
procrastinate turning your forms and monies in.  Lesson learned!

BAND ALOHA CONCERT 
This SaturdayMay 6th, at 7pm, the Band will have it's final Aloha Concert featuring
the Beginning Honor Band, the Intermediate Band, the Symphonic Band, and special 
guests, Mr. Woolsey's Ukulele Ensemble. Come hear music from "Moana" and 
"Beauty & the Beast." It will be held in the cafeteria and admission is free.

SUMMER SCHOOL/CREDIT RECOVERY
Summer School will be held  in A-building this summer for CREDIT RECOVERY only,..
for grades 7-12. If you failed a class in the past or you fail a class this school year,  
pick up a registration form and more information from Mrs. Finai in A-105, your counselor
or from the front office counter...starting WEDNESDAY, April 5, 2017.  $95 to register
for a 1/2 credit semester course & $190 for a year course. Grades 7 & 8 ... $ 125.00

HOLOMUA - BYUHI SUMMER PROGRAM 
A summer experience at BYU-HI for JUNIORS - June 19-24, 2017.  Online registration is                                   
OPEN - the application deadline is May 26, 2017.  Students who complete the HOLOMONA 
and gain admission in Fall 2018 will receive a 1/4 tuition award in their first semester at BYU-HI.

Hawaiian Civic Club is committed to support students of Hawaiian ancestry in 
completing two or more years of college.  Our Primary responsibility is to preserve
long held Native Hawaiian traditions.   
Aloha Care (for a healthy Hawaii) – Due:  May 31, 2017 at 3pmthe purpose of 
this scholarship is to support family members of a current AlohaCare member and
demonstrate intention to pursue a career in health care or social services.

cafeteria account. Make payments, view purchase history and receive low balance alerts.
For information on how to set-up this account please go to:www.kahukuhigh.org, under the 
Families tab, scroll down to Schoolcafe.com.  A mobile app for iphone, Android and Windows
is available as well. Payments can still be made using the envelopes in the front office. 
Starting the week of April 10th, automated calls will be going out to notify parents with
delinquent accounts.  If you have additional questions, please contact Dee Dee Kahele

HAVING TROUBLE WITH YOUR IC APP?  
There are a couple of new and recent issues if your app is not working... Try these 
things... If it cannot verify you as a user get on a computer and log in. You may
be asked to update your contact email or change your password. Remember, your 
Kahuku Gmail will not work as an IC recovery email! No person outside of the Kahuku
Google system can email a student's gmail. If your app is asking for a district to search 
for, type "Hawaii" as the district name and then select the only entry that pops up. Email 
me on your Kahuku gmail if you need more help.   M. Jackson

also get a snack from Q6 before heading to Homework Help.

ATTENDANCE POLICY UPDATES: 
Please encourage your child to attend school daily and be on time to every class. 
Parents/Guardians will be notified via the Mass Messaging system if your child is 
tardy or absent from a class. Parents/Guardians can monitor their child's daily 
attendance through the online infinite Campus Parent Portal

Reminder: 
To excuse an absence, a parent/guardian can submit a note to the Attendance Clerk
within three days upon your child's return to school. Please refer to the Red Book 
for the list of reasons absences that can be excused.  A request to extend the three
day timeline will need to be approved by your child's Vice Principal. 

Amendment: Effective Feb. 27, 2017
Students will be required to attend one hour of after school detention for the third and
each subsequent verified unexcused absence for each class period missed.  Detentions 
not served will be treated as obligations.  Parents/Guardians will be notified of
unexcused absences via the Mass Messaging system and the online Infinite Campus 
Parent Portal. Students are responsible to keep track of detention hours that are not 
serviced. 

Chronic Absenteeism:
 . Parent Contact: Parents/Guardians of a student who is absent for 15 days or more
will be contacted by school personnel via letter, phone, and/or home visit to discuss 
the seriousness of the situation. A parent/guardian conference will be scheduled to 
discuss further interventions including counseling, a Behavior Support Plan, and/or 
an alternative placement to help improve student attendance. 
.  Family Court Intervention: Parents/Guardians of a student who is absent from 
school for 20 days or more due to truancy may be referred by the school to the 
State Attorney General's office for possible Family Court intervention.

STUDENT PRINTING
Starting this semester, teachers will not be allowing other students into their classes during 
instructional time to print, even if you have a pass. Students can print in P-38 from 
7:15 - 7:50am. and 2:30 -3:30pm. Also in room W-304 from 7:30 - 8:00 am and Recess.

PERSONAL ITEM DELIVERY
Due to the increasing amount of personal items delivered to students, unless it is deemed
an emergency, students will need to come to the front office to get their items during 
recess or lunch. Instructional time will not be interrupted and school personnel will not
be utilized for the purpose of delivering personal items.                   - Admin

INFINITE CAMPUS APP 
If you want easy access to yours or your students' grades on your phone, you can download
the Infinite Campus app on your phone. You must have previously set up your account on a
computer or tablet. Search for “Infinite Campus Mobile Portal” to download to your mobile
device. The Hawaii Department of Education District ID is RXCDMR.

STUDENT OFF CAMPUS PASS
Students leaving campus during the school day are required to have an official Student Pass.
To expedite the process of a student getting a Student Pass, parents/guardians are advised to
call the school at 305-7300 in the morning or send a note with your child and drop it off at
the front office before school starts. Without prior notice, the wait time to get a student 
out of class will vary depending on the availability of staff. We do not call classrooms 
during instructional time. 

Please include the following information in the note for a Student Pass:
1. Date note was written
2. Child's legal name and grade level 
3. Date and time to be released
4. Reason for early release
5. Current phone number
6. Parent/guardian signature

Students who are 18 years old may sign themselves out of school, however, parent/guardians 
will be notified and students will need administrative approval to be allowed back on campus.
You will be asked to present identification when picking up your child. Students will only be
released to their parent/guardian documented in school records (this does not include 
Emergency Card contacts). The Student Pass must be returned to the front office if the 
student returns to school before the end of the day.

CAFETERIA DROP-OFF
The cafeteria gate will be open from 7:30 am-8:00am for student drop-off.  This is a drop-off
area only--please do not park.  For safety reasons, please drive slowly, look out for our 
student bicyclists/pedestrians, and do not bypass the line of cars.

STUDENT ID AND LUNCH REMINDER 
Students are required to have their school ID and have a balance on their lunch account to 
purchase meals. If students have lost or misplaced their school ID they may purchase a 
replacement ID card at Q1 for a fee of $1 during recess or lunch. If students do not have 
money to purchase an replacement ID, an obligation slip will be given to them in their period
one class to take home to their parents/guardians. Please call 305-7394 if you do not want
 your child to get a replacement ID.

The Kahuku Rugby team won the Pacific Cup NATIONAL Champions by 
defeating Danville HS (CA) who were the reigning National Champions.
