Join the world’s largest volunteer effort for our ocean!

Saturday, September 19th is the Ocean Conservancy’s 30th International Coastal Cleanup Day. Join Plastic Free Hawaiʻi and other partners at one of the many beach cleanups planned around the island of Oʻahu. PFH will be concentrating on the James Campbell Wildlife Refuge in Kahuku with partners the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and other partners.

The cleanup will go from 9:00am - 11:00am, with check-in starting at 8:30am. We will be carpooling into the reserve so please arrive before 9am.

Volunteers should bring sun protection, refillable water bottles, and gloves. Buckets, colanders, and reusable rubbish bags are helpful. 

Directions to Kahuku: James Campbell Wildlife Refuge. From Turtle Bay side turn left off Kamehameha Highway at mile marker #15 on the beach side, it is the only paved road. From Kahuku towards Turtle Bay, pass the Kahuku Hospital, turn right after the 2nd bridge just before Kahuku Farms. Follow the road to the gazebo learning center. Keep the Hawaiian Islands Beautiful organizes the Hawaiʻi state effort as a part of this global Ocean Conservancy event. Hawaii has been participating in the ICC or “Get the Drift and Bag It Campaign” since 1988 with 60 to 100 participating local cleanup locations in recent years. Ocean Conservancy partners with organizations and individuals around the globe to clean up the world’s beaches and waterways. Over nearly three decades, the annual International Coastal Cleanup has mobilized millions of people in the world’s largest volunteer effort for our ocean and waterways. An astounding 560,000 volunteers in 91 countries picked up more than 16 million pounds of trash during the 2014 International Coastal Cleanup.
